Bio

Phoenix Toews is an expert computer programmer and multifaceted digital artist. His focus is on using digital technology to transform the experience of the ordinary into the sublime. Phoenix's work incorporates a variety of media, sound, live and recorded video, computer/human interaction, installation and theatrical performance. In 2003, he began shooting experimental films, programming custom video effects, and using them in interactive video-to-audio installations. His work is often evocative of synaesthetic experiences, creating installations where light and motion are transformed into sound, or that allow a participant to "sculpt" light with their hands. For his MFA thesis, Phoenix developed an augmented reality system for creating socially mediated narratives and experiences contextualized by geographic location and the physical environment. He uses augmented reality to revealing the untold stories hidden within the ever shifting geography of social influences and interactions in a place. Phoenix currently resides in Santa Cruz, California.
