Maura A. Smale is a librarian and assistant professor at New York City College of Technology where she coordinates the library’s instruction and information literacy efforts. Her academic background includes both a PhD in anthropology and an MLIS, which are brought together in her current research—a multi-year, multi-campus ethnographic study of the daily experience of undergraduates as students at the City University of New York. Working with colleague Mariana Regalago, she has asked students to complete photo surveys and mapping diaries of aspects of their daily lives related to school work. Through the resulting visual data and in-person interviews they have begun to collect a broad array of data about how students travel through their days, where technology fits in, and their satisfactions and frustrations. Maura is delighted to be part of the MobilityShifts conference and looks forward to learning from other presenters and attendees.
