Bio

Laura Gillespie is a former high school English teacher, university English professor, and a current history enthusiast, who found a second home as a curriculum editor and web designer for the Alice Ferguson Foundation’s model outdoor science program, Bridging the Watershed (BTW). BTW’s constructivist and cross-curricular approach to learning science in national parks provided the foundation for Laura’s interest in informal learning environments and the role that augmented reality can play to enhance experiences at historical sites. As a part of her dissertation, she is developing an augmented reality game for Harpers Ferry National Historical Park that she hopes will make the site come alive, both as a once-thriving industrial town and as the site of John Brown’s Raid. Laura holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature, a Master’s degree in Medieval Studies, and is currently working on her doctorate in Information and Interaction Design from the University of Baltimore.
